Happy New Moon in Sagittarius!

I hope folks are enjoying the holiday season as it gets underway. ‘Tis the season for Hallmark movies, which I am an unabashed sucker for. But I digress.

So let’s get into how to work with the energy of this New Moon and what it’s all about. 🌚

Yesterday evening, at 6:32pm ET, we marked a New Moon at 20 degrees of Sagittarius (one of my very favorite signs of the zodiac, as a proud Sag Rising). Meanwhile, Mercury stationed retrograde early this morning at 8 degrees of Capricorn, so that energy is infusing this New Moon too.

What does the combo of these two astrological events mean in terms of the astroweather? A collision of Sagittarius and Capricorn energy. Which can be a pretty cool thing if we lean into the highest vibrations of this energy blend.

First, Sagittarius. Sagittarius is the sign of The Archer (which is why its glyph looks like an arrow pointing upward). ♐️ It’s ruled by expansive, optimistic, big-thinking Jupiter. Another archetype associated with Sagittarius is The Philosopher, given its connection to ancient/timeless wisdom, the laws of the universe, and the meaning of life. It’s linked with exploration, long-distance travel, and experiences that expand our minds.

Energetically, at its highest vibration, Sagittarius manifests as a focused beam of light, like an arrow shooting with precision towards its destination—think: setting a lofty goal (especially one others say isn’t possible to attain) and then focusing our energy towards achieving it.

By contrast, in its lower vibration/shadow expression, Sagittarius can show up as a bunch of arrows being fired all at once without clear direction or aim—think: constant doing spurred by an overactive mind that ends up diffusing our energy and possibly leading to burnout.

Enter Mercury retrograde in Capricorn. Ruled by restrictive, disciplined, boundary queen Saturn (which is the polar opposite of expansive, boundless Jupiter), Capricorn is all about structure. The mountain-climber of the zodiac, t’s also associated with ambition and worldly achievement, as well as time, money, and career. If Sagittarius rules the arrow we point towards our lofty goal, Capricorn governs what we make manifest in the world—what we ultimately actually achieve.

With these energies fused together, I read this New Moon as an invitation to dream big and set bold, expansive intentions for the next six months (when we’ll mark the next Full Moon in Sagittarius)—while being disciplined and clear about what we’re going to put our energies towards and the structures we need to put in place to actually achieve our lofty goals (and without burning ourselves out).

And the Mercury retrograde in Capricorn portal (Dec. 13, 2023—Jan 1, 2024) is a great time to get deep into operationalizing that second piece. Mercury retrogrades are all about reviewing, revising, revisiting. And in Capricorn, that’s reviewing, revising, revisiting how we’re using our time, money, and other resources . . .the boundaries and structures we have in place that enable us to manifest our goals and plans. . . and, possibly, even what our career and other worldly ambitions really are to make sure they’re in alignment with our inner truth.

So, to summarize: This week invites us to set intentions on two fronts—both for the upcoming 6-month chapter between the Sagittarius New and Full Moons AND how we want to work with the upcoming Mercury retrograde portal to ground our lofty aims in an earthly strategic plan that will set us up for success in achieving those longer-term goals.

I’m sending you all good wishes and many blessings in this New Moon week—and without further ado, scroll on down for the 9-card tarot spread/journal prompts I crafted to work with the New Moon in Sagittarius x Mercury Retrograde in Capricorn energy at its highest vibrations.
